Reparations in Music Scholarship
Last year….or maybe it was the year before…I was asked to contribute to a special issue of American Music on the future of American music scholarship. At the time, I was working on my Julia Perry chapter for Expanding the Canon, ed. by Melissa Hoag. My many conflicting thoughts about this work made me sit down and think about White scholars writing about composers and other musicians of color. Here’s the page proofs of what I wrote: “Reparations in Music Scholarship.” I’m still thinking about it, and trying to do right. The incredible generosity of folks on social media has helped tremendously.
